The Nature of Prayer
Prayer is simply talking to God. It can be a conversation, and it involves welcoming God's perspective into your situation and asking for wisdom and understanding.
Biblical Examples on Prayer:
Mary, Deborah, and Hannah: Their prayers, often in the form of songs, were expressions of delight, thanksgiving, and answered prayer (Luke 1:46-55, Judges 5, 1 Samuel 2:1-10).
David: He prayed in the fields, demonstrating prayer in a regular setting.
Daniel: He started his prayers by acknowledging God's greatness before making a request, which builds faith.
God's Timing and Persistence
God's timing is perfect and doesn't align with our own.
Key theme is persistence in prayer.
"How long, O Lord?" (Psalm 13): This scripture addresses the feeling of waiting and unanswered prayers, reminding us that God's timing is perfect.
"Ask, Seek, Knock" (Matthew 7:7-12): This passage encourages persistence. If a prayer isn't answered immediately, it's not a sign of God's lack of love but an invitation to continue praying. The Bible shows that persistence often leads to answered prayers.
The Example of Jesus
Jesus not only prayed but also taught and modeled prayer for His disciples, making it a central part of a believer's life.
Mark 1:35 (NIV): "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." This shows Jesus' commitment to solitary prayer.
Modeling Prayer: We can model prayer for others, especially children, to make it a natural and unintimidating part of their lives. Seeing a person in prayer can be contagious and inspire others to learn.
Forgiveness and Prayer
Forgiveness is presented as an important part of prayer, both giving and receiving it.
Forgive and Release: The notes reference Ephesians 4:26, stating that we should forgive and release. Something supernatural happens when we let go of unforgiveness.
Matthew 6:5-15: This passage, which includes the Lord's Prayer, reminds us to offer forgiveness. The notes suggest that God may prompt us to repent or forgive others during prayer, even if we don't feel like it.
Consequences of Unforgiveness: The notes state that not forgiving someone is a sin, and that true forgiveness brings a sense of release. An example is the thief on the cross, who was forgiven by Jesus after acknowledging His innocence.
